Summer Holiday/Long weekend in Budapest, Hungary

Updated: Aug 25, 2020

We visited the Hungarian capital for 3 days in August. It was super hot with temperatures reaching 35C which was sometimes unbearable but endless amounts of iced coffees and ice cream helped. That’s just how we do it!

We began with a guided tour of the Parliament. Secure your tickets online at least a day before as they get booked up pretty quickly. The guides there are great and within approx. 1hr 30min take you through the whole building, and point out all the cool facts and legends including why the cross on the stunning holy crown is noticeably crooked!

The National Hungarian Museum offers some good overall insight and the Cathedral is also worth a quick glance.

Walking through the museum you discover history of Hungarian art with some interesting pieces on the way.

It’s worth noting that many tourist attractions have discounted tickets for visitors under 26 years old, students etc. so don’t forget to pack your ID’s. There are quite a few shops, restaurants and bars within this area so we stopped for some flower arranged ice cream, aperol spritz and souvenirs of course.

Try some traditional Hungarian Langós (deep fried dough with savoury or sweet toppings). We went to Retró Lángos restaurant which has a good choice and good prices. There is a vegan option on the menu.

Buda Castle with Matthias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion offers some great panorama views of the city, but is a very popular attraction so expect crowds.

Next to it there is the National Gallery which has an entry to the dome balcony included in the ticket so it is also another great opportunity for good photo snaps of both sides of the river.

In the evening, and when we felt our legs were giving up on us a bit we booked an evening cruise on the river with a drink. Take an hour to sit back, relax and sip wine, which is included in the ticket, admiring the scenery and the magnificent parliament which lights up in gold! Again book it online if you can, we had a few issues with trying to do it last minute...

For a quick change of scenery we jumped on a train to Balatonfüred to take a dip in Lake Balaton (the biggest in Hungary and Central Europe) visit one of the local wineries where you can stay and drink some wine produced right there. You can also buy a bottle to take home and it cost us only about £3 per glass!
